Italia Ciribelli


Born in in Trieste, Italy in 1892, the first year of the term of Presidente Floriano Peixoto, and died aged sixty-two in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil in the year Presidente Café Filho assumed the Presidency.

Early marriage


Trieste 1890

Born either in Trieste, Italy or - according to her marriage certificate - in Minas Gerais, by the time she was fifteen she was living in Rio de Janeiro and had lost both her parents.

She was put under the guardianship of Antonio Pereira da Silva in Rio de Janeiro and married his son José in 1908.

Late Divorce

On the 6th of September 1930, Italia went to court to annul her marriage on the basis that she was coerced into marrying the son of her guardian. This annulment was requested after no less than 27 years of marriage and four children.

According to the case the annulment was not contested by her husband so she was granted it.

Three months later, now aged 38, she married 36-year-old José Monteiro Soares Filho, a politician who has just lost his mandate as a Councillor in his native town of Vassouras in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1936 Itália ran for office as a Councillor for the city of Vassouras and won the highest number of votes, thus becoming the first woman councillor not just in Vassouras but in the state as well. The occasion merited a lengthy article in O Jornal. Her husband was by now a congressman in the Brazilian parliament.
